How to Find the Perfect Gift: Solve Common Gifting Struggles with These Simple Tips

Struggling to Find the Perfect Gift? You’re Not Alone!

One of the hardest things about buying a gift for a loved one is simply not knowing what they want. You want your present to be meaningful, useful, and appreciated - but finding the right balance can be stressful. I'm in the gift-giving business, but I find it really hard sometimes too!

What’s the hardest thing about buying a gift for a loved one? Especially when you have no idea what they want! Sometimes it can feel really hard to find the perfect gift. We all want to give loved ones something special: thoughtful gifts, meaningful presents, something with a bit of wow factor that will make them smile... But how to choose a gift for someone who has everything (or seems to) - how to find an affordable but thoughtful gift idea, or pick a unique gift for a loved one?

Here are the Top 5 Most Common Gift-Giving Struggles (and how to overcome them):

  1. Finding something meaningful - something that shows how much you care, that reflects their personality or interests.
  2. Choosing something they’ll actually like - there’s always a worry you’ll pick a gift they’ll have no genuine interest in.
  3. Balancing practicality with sentiment - some people like useful, practical gifts, others like something more sentimental; finding the right balance between these can be tricky.
  4. Budget - It would be easy to find the right gift if money were no object, right? Having a budget can make decisions difficult, especially in times of rising prices (and often, lowering value).
  5. Repetition - worry that you might keep giving them similar gifts each time, that your gift might be a bit boring.

Add into the mix a little bonus struggle: Overthinking! I personally do that a lot - it makes the whole process go from something that should feel pleasurable and fun to something more stressful that it needs to be!

So go on then, how do you solve all these gift giving problems and worries? I’m glad you asked - read on for a few little strategies..!

Personalised Gift Ideas For The Hard To Buy For

Simple Strategies for Stress-Free Gift Giving:

  1. Finding something meaningful
A great gift should reflect the recipient’s personality, interests, or emotions. To make it meaningful:
✔ Pay attention to hints or conversations, not necessarily about things they want but things that mean something to them.
✔ It could be a problem they have - maybe they complain about something, perhaps there’s something they find a bit irritating and you can solve the issue for them?
✔ Any particular interests such as family, travel, history, etc that they may have? If you can tie a gift into an interest, or help with an issue for them, then you’re 80% of the way there!
✔ A personalised gift also goes a long way to showing how much thought and care has gone into their gift. Something that has been made especially for them will have so much more significance for them than a mass produced item.

  2. Choosing something they’ll actually like
Worried they won’t love your gift? Here’s how to make sure they do:
✔ Subtly gather ideas - you could, of course, just ask them outright but that spoils the fun! When you’ve got a birthday for example that’s coming up, start conversations that might make them mention an item, style, problem or issue they have.
✔ Pay attention to what they talk about without making it obvious(!) to give yourself some ideas to start your gift searching with.
✔ Focus on their passions and interests, think about their personal style. Bring up topics related to shopping and see what they say.

  3. Balancing practicality with sentiment
Some people love practical gifts, while others prefer sentimental ones. If you’re unsure:
Combine both! A practical gift with a sentimental touch (e.g., my personalised Cook's Conversion Chart shown below) is the best of both worlds.
✔ Practical gift ideas are all about solving a problem. It could be something like a place to rest their glasses without them getting knocked off the bedside table, maybe someone at work keeps nicking their mug, or perhaps they have pockets full of poo bags from walking the dog every day and would appreciate a nice little bag to attach to the lead?! It’s the daft little things that we would probably never buy for ourselves that could become a brilliant practical gift they use every day.
✔ Focus on daily use If they’ll use it often, they’ll think of you every time!

  4. Budget
Great gifts don’t have to be expensive:
✔ Set your budget and stick to it, and remember it’s not the price tag but the thought behind a gift. Something simple but heartfelt will always mean much more than an expensive no-expense-spared gift.
✔ Personalised gifts really come into their own when you're working to a budget. Likewise handmade gifts (either made by you, or by a professional crafter or artisan) will always feel much more special because there won’t be a preconceived price for the recipient due to the uniqueness of the gift. Custom items feel high-value without a hefty price tag
✔ Could you pool resources with other family members or friends to buy a group gift between you?

  5. Repetition
Keep buying them socks or chocolates every year? Tired of giving the same thing every year? Here’s how to change it up:
✔ Keep track of the gifts you’ve given in the past to avoid repeating them. Start by keeping notes on your phone perhaps, or start a small gift journal book.
✔ Explore niche or unique interests you know they like but you haven’t tapped into yet.
✔ Make it personalised - even if you do end up giving them socks again, maybe think about personalised ones this time so that you’re giving a gift a bit less ordinary.

Personalised Cook's Conversion Chart Kitchen Prints

And overthinking? I find when I’m falling down a rabbit hole on the internet and don’t know what gift to buy someone, remembering KISS helps (Keep It Simple, Stupid)! It can be easy to think too much and find yourself feeling overwhelmed, so take a step back. Sometimes the best gifts are the simplest: focus on the person and/or their needs rather than obsessing over perfection. Trust your instincts, as often the first things you think of are spot on perfect!

So keep in mind these two easy tips:

✔ Think about their interests - what makes them happy?
✔ Simple but heartfelt - it's the thought that counts!

By taking a more thoughtful and relaxed approach, these gift-giving dilemmas can become a lot easier and instinctive, enjoyable rather than stressful. Pay attention, personalise gifts when possible, and don’t stress about perfection - the best gifts come from the heart!

What’s your biggest struggle when picking gifts? Who do you find hardest to buy for? ...and have you headed over to PhotoFairytales.co.uk because you might just find something that ticks all the gift giving boxes - for you and for them!

The changing face of retail in a time of Covid...

Non essential bricks and mortar shops are reopening on Monday after months of being closed - but if feels as though they’ll be opening their doors to a much changed retail landscape. So many high street names have gone permanently. It’s so sad to see household names like Debenhams go, but in a way, for many of these retailers it isn’t a huge surprise. Some of these businesses have been slow to realise that it isn’t just about making cold hard cash, it’s about putting the customer first and in the front when they make decisions about how their business evolves and behaves. Shopping nowadays is about adapting to change, realising what people want - it’s about conscience , responsibility, being fresh and innovative.

Covid has forced retail to change or die. Old established retailers going bust makes us all sad because we have a connection built through years of tradition. I still think the most shocking closure in recent years was seeing Woolworths go, and I still miss it!

My local Woolies in Dereham before it closed

I think many of us still feel a bit nervous about going back to shopping on the high street - we’ve spent a year training ourselves to stay safe, be precautious and careful, and I think a lot of us will be feeling naturally reticent about wandering around shops like we used to. Plus, of course, we’re still going to be wearing face masks and social distancing, and that makes the thought of browsing casually around shops still feel pretty impossible and gloomy for the time being.

As a small business owner, it’s hard to feel confident when you see huge, established retailers struggling to survive. It takes nerves of steel not to run for the hills sometimes! But it’s important to remind yourself that being successful isn’t just about the big numbers: lots of shops, big profit margins, a huge staff. Now, more than ever, it’s about putting the customer first, thinking about what they need and like, helping them, and being responsible when it comes to the planet.

I’ve seen a complete shift over the 12 years since I started PhotoFairytales - we’re all so much more mindful about what we bring into our lives. Buying conscientiously rather than impulsively, being deliberate in our choices. What we buy is a commitment. It’s about buying things we love from retailers we care about, rather than just ‘stuff’ (for want of a better word!). With so many people losing their jobs and having to watch what they spend over the last year, this is more important than it ever was.

I believe that customers now don’t buy ‘from’, they buy ‘into’. We’ve all done it: buying from Shop A because it makes us feel good (better service, nicer shop, better buying experience, more ‘quality’ feeling…). Sometimes it isn’t all about cost, even in times of austerity. It’s more complex than that now. Customers are far more aware of how a business conducts itself, how in touch with it’s customers it is, with changing styles and trends, with the care and attention it puts into earning your custom.

In theory, it should be much easier for a bricks and mortar shop to be able to look after it’s customers: after all, it sees them face to face. But all too often that’s not the case. My very first job was working on the shop floor of Laura Ashley. We were told that when a customer pays using their credit card we should surreptitiously read the name on the card, and then say “thank you Mrs X” as we passed it back to them. Call me a rebel (and I did get told off more than once), but I NEVER did that - apart from the fact that it felt weird and a bit stalker-ish, it wasn’t remotely natural! It felt fake. And despite it trying to make it feel more personal for the customer I thought then (and still do) that it made it more impersonal. Was I right? What would you feel if a member of sales staff did that with your card?!

Laura Ashley in Norwich... as was

Face to face retailers don’t have the monopoly when it comes to looking after customers. That’s because it’s not all about the transaction, it’s about service, care, aftercare, advice, expert knowledge, giving people time, being approachable and helpful, letting people know you’re there if they need you (and making sure you get back to them in a timely fashion when they do!). Excellent service can be replicated online - and it’s your right to expect it!

I suppose essentially what I’m saying is that every pound spent is a vote - and we should all vote wisely! Imagine for a minute if every retailer only had 4 years, like a government. After 4 years they only get to stay open if customers vote for them. And in a way, that’s basically what we’ve all been doing: voting, with our hard earned cash! So, here’s my bit of ‘electioneering’!:

  • My manifesto is: Better gifts, better experience - to make shopping enjoyable and friendly. Customers are my community, people with a shared philosophy. The distance between me (Sarah) and you (lovely customer) should be tiny (especially when compared to the big high street retailers).
  • My philosophy is: Happy customers, happy business. It’s that simple.
  • My mission is: To help people find a gift that they will love giving, to make other people as passionate about gift giving as I am. To consistently work hard at adapting, evolving, to follow styles and trends whilst maintaining the sense of quality, detail and longevity.

My business has to be sustainable for me too; I have to be able to sustain my family, keep the orders rolling in. Tiny independent businesses like mine (run from our family home, no staff, no warehouse, no ‘departments’, just me) don’t have the money, staff or advertising budgets that large companies do. But what we do have is agility. We can adapt with speed to offer people what they want: quickly, efficiently, with flair and personality. Businesses like mine remember customers, they have a friendly personal way of doing business - so many people that I count as friends were once customers. It’s about building relationships, not reading a name of a credit card as you hand it back.

There’s always going to be a place for high street shops, of course there is. All I ask, on my behalf and all of those other micro online businesses out there, is that you keep us in mind over the next 12 months. We kept going through all 3 lockdowns, with a cheery (mostly) disposition, adapting to the weird fluctuations of the retail world during coronavirus (zero orders one week, sales up 200% the following week, post office counters not always open when we thought they’d be, people suddenly needing to buy face masks rather than meals out!). We’ve adapted, cared, invented and evolved - and whilst it’s been stressful and meant a lot of long hours or hard work, it’s also been a hell of a lot of fun: long may it continue!

Stay safe, stay well,

Sarah x

I'm open as usual at PhotoFairytales!

I know that with the shops shut and everyone being told to stay home, it's now more than ever that people need to be able to rely on online shopping for lots of items. Just because we can't see friends and family in person, doesn't mean that birthdays, anniversaries, and 'thinking of you' gifts can't still be sent to loved ones. I just wanted to reassure you that it's business as usual here at PhotoFairytales: I'm well, I'm open for business, I'm creating and dispatching all orders as usual and within the normal turnaround times.

Business as usual at PhotoFairytales...

If you need me to send a gift directly to a loved one that's easy - just enter their delivery address when you place your order and I'll send it direct to them for you. If you'd like me to enclose a gift message for you I can do that free of charge (just pop the details in the 'special instructions' space in the shopping cart). Don't worry about the price being revealed either: I never enclose invoices with orders, so they won't see!

Worried about gift wrap? Don't worry, just let me know and wherever possible I'll wrap the gift in pretty tissue paper for you too. I'm offering this free of charge at the moment wherever possible, however there are a few items on my site that may not be available for free gift wrapping as they're created on my behalf by other suppliers - it may still be possible to offer gift wrapping on those items, but there may be a small charge. If you'd like gift wrapping please contact me before placing your order and I'll be happy to confirm whether this can be done free or will be a charged service.

Need to send someone a card? I've got lots of gorgeous cards for all sorts of occasions on the site, and they can all be personalised too - so you can request personalisation on the front of the card AND a personal message on the inside of the card. Plus I can send it direct to the recipient for you too.

Self isolation doesn't mean you are cut off from everything, or that you have to miss important dates. Even if you just want to send a 'thinking of you' style present to someone you can't go to see in person, or send something to help raise their spirits and bring some cheer, I can sort that out for you.

Whether it's a special occasion, friends or family - I've got loads of great gift ideas for you! No matter whether it's a birthday, anniversary, arrival of a baby, or just a 'best wishes' style present, you'll find lots of really unique and creative gift ideas on the site that are all available today.

A note about me personally - as I said, I'm well, open, creating and dispatching as normal. Absolutely no one is allowed in my studio other than me: I'm keeping everything clean and my handwashing is unsurpassed! Like most of you, my family are now working from home too and are absolutely behind the cleanliness regime - we're all in this together!

I now have a dedicated page on my site with updates about dispatch and deliveries during this time - you can find it under the Delivery & Info tab at the top of the website. I'm here to help, so if you have a question about anything please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I feel it's super important for both you and me to try to keep life as normal as possible. I want to thank you for supporting my micro business - I know we're in worrying times at the moment, but I won't let you down and your continued support is MASSIVELY appreciated. We're all going to need each other that little bit more over the coming weeks. Just because we're confined to our homes and apart, doesn't mean we can't all be together. I'd love to hear from you, so if you fancy a chat do head over and find me on Facebook.

And finally... as Gisele, the owner of Mir Skin Care, said to me the other day:
"Micro businesses are the safest, goods pass through a limited number of (thoroughly washed) hands and the business owner is in full control of every process."
And she's absolutely right!

Stay home, stay safe - shop online, support micro business.

Why is the High Street called the High Street?

Lots of times I talk about the fact that the items you find on PhotoFairytales you can’t find on the high street. Not being able to find something on the high street is seen as something that gives an item a sense of prestige and scarcity. If it’s something found on the high street then any Tom, Dick or Harry can buy it and that means it isn’t your special, unique discovery!

When you hear the term ‘high street’ you tend to picture a street aimed fairly squarely at retail, full of shops and bustle. But why is it called a ‘high street’, even if the street in question is actually named something completely different? Apparently it all started around 1000AD - when the word ‘high’ was used in the context of superiority (think ‘high society’, ‘high ranking’). A ‘high street’ also physically reflected a road that was built more substantially as a main thoroughfare - above all the mud and mire on normal streets!

So the main street through a town became the ‘high street’ because it was usually the only one that wasn’t a mud trail and along which retailers naturally wanted to sell their wares. Now High Street is the most common road name in the UK: there are nearly 5,500 of them. And they all look the same and sell the same stuff - which is why shopping online for your Christmas presents makes so much more sense!

Gifts for Teachers - what on earth do you get?!

As a mum, I can easily recognise that reports of a massive increase in giving gifts to teachers is certainly true. It seems that many parents now like to give their child’s teacher a gift both at the end of the school year, and at Christmas time too. But the difficulty is, what to give?

Speaking to other parents and teachers, it seems that the most common gift is either a box of chocolates or a plant or bunch of flowers. But, if you want to thank your child’s teacher with a more unusual gift where do you start? Most people work to a budget, and want to give a gift that won’t break the bank. So the search is on for a low cost and unusual gift for your teacher - where to start?!

A great personalised gift can prove to be an ideal solution. Something that raises a smile, or laughter even. Get it right and you could just be finding the perfect gift that ticks all the boxes. Ideally it would be something truly thoughtful that will be treasured, or perhaps something both fun and practical.

Now, if you can do all that you can relax - you’ve done it, you’ve found the perfect gift. Then all you need to worry about is the next gift time…!

Christmas: the Top 5 reasons why you need to change your habits this year!

Anyone who creates or designs their own work, and sells their work independently, is (it seems) automatically geared up for supporting other similar artisans. Since starting PhotoFairytales I’ve been lucky to make some wonderful contacts and friendships with other designer-makers. We all seem to recognise the spirit and passion we have for our work, and feel a desire to support one another.

Most designer-makers, crafters and handmade artists are already buying work from fellow sellers. Now, the question is, how do we get consumers at large to forego the high street and the major player websites this Christmas, and buy from the smaller independent sellers instead?

Getting people to go shopping is not a problem - OK, so sales in retail have been suffering of late thanks to the recession, but ultimately we are still buying gifts for loved ones, and the odd treat for ourselves and our home. Whilst people may find that they need to budget a little more carefully, one thing that they may not be aware of is that buying handmade is a fabulous way of making their spending work. I’m not suggesting that buying handmade is going to be cheaper than buying from the high street - in some cases it isn’t - but it’s often of a similar price, and hey, you’re discovering something amazing that has been made with love and passion (and not thrown together on an assembly line).

So here are my top 5 reasons why you need to change your shopping habits NOW:
  1. Stop lining the pockets of the big guys - When you make a purchase from a small, independent designer-maker you are supporting an individual. A real person, who has put their soul and passion into that item you’ve purchased. You’re not lining the pockets of a huge corporation, you’re making a real difference to the life of one, single person (or tiny team). You’re helping them to look after their family, and to keep their business alive. Your purchase makes a difference - a HUGE difference! And the best bit of all is that the person you’ve just bought from probably buys their supplies from another small independent business - so the money you spend keeps working and supporting these people.
  2. Help the UK economy - if you buy something from a UK designer-maker you are directly helping the UK economy. You aren’t a link in the chain unwillingly supporting those factories in China.
  3. It’s the thought that counts - it’s a cliché, but this is a phrase that comes into its own when you buy handmade. We’ve all done it: walking around the shops aimlessly trying to find “something” for “about £x” for someone. How many times have we picked something up in a shop and thought “that’ll do”? I’ve done it, and I bet you have too! But by changing your shopping habit and channelling your effort into finding something different you automatically unearth not just “something” but a little treasure that is totally unique (and often totally bespoke too - how posh is that?!).
  4. Stop searching for something “different” - if you often find yourself trying to buy something a little unusual, this is another reason why you need to buy handmade. Designers and creators are passionate about new design - they live and breathe what they do and are always striving to do something new. Handmade artists, crafts people and designers offer unique value: giving you that special feeling that only an item made with passion can create. If you want cutting edge design with soul, something more “next season” than last, you know what you need to do!
  5. Help the environment - if this is something you feel passionate about, then buying from a small, independent business is a great way of doing it. No huge lorries carrying massive bulk deliveries covered in acres of packaging. No factories. Often no commuting (given that many designer-makers work from their own home)! Buying vintage is also the ultimate way of recycling of course.

So, other than buying from PhotoFairytales (of course!), where else do you shop when you want to discover a gorgeous handmade, independently designed/created item? What great places (online or offline) have you found to unearth treasures?

Do you make, create, or design gorgeousness that you think everyone should buy this Christmas?

Will you pledge to change your habits this Christmas (in which case, why not tweet this post or give it a like on Facebook and tell everyone!)?

Leave a comment or a link and let me know!

The Sound of Silence...

Since being a child, I've always found it near impossible to work in silence - my homework was always done with the sound of Scooby Doo or Hong Kong Phooey in the background! And as an adult, I'm no different. Whenever I'm working I always have the radio on, usually tuned into Radio 4. Now, apparently, the average age of listeners to Radio 4 is 55 - and before you ask, no I'm not! Call me an old fogey, but I've actually been listening to it since I was in my twenties - and favourites include Woman's Hour, The Archers (of course), and the fantastic comedy (if you haven't discovered Milton Jones, The Unbelievable Truth, Just a Minute or the News Quiz - well, quite frankly, you're missing out!).

As well as those favourites, I do end up listening inadvertently to a large amount of news bulletins throughout the day. And on budget day this year I found myself putting orders to one side and seizing on a bit of inspiration that seemed to appear from nowhere. Although, with the budget and politicians whittering away in the background its' actually quite easy to work out where my idea for a series of three new print designs came from!

You can find all three designs in my Folksy Shop, or at wowthankyou.com

Now, Money Box Live has just started, wonder what that will inspire...!
